5. The presence of Fernandinho
While Pep Guardiola prefers to play with three players in the midfield, it is the presence of Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho that has been a big factor in their impressive performances. Fernandinho is the only defensive minded midfielder Pep normally has in his starting lineup, but it doesn’t backfire because the Brazilian has been quite brilliant with his work rate and energy in the heart of the midfield. He has been the engine that has protected the back four and helped the attacking players do their job and give City a great start to the season.
4. Having the right players
Last season, Pep struggled to play the type of game he wanted as the players he had at his disposal weren’t able to play as he wanted. With an overhaul in the summer with the transfers, Guardiola has certainly got it right. Attacking full-backs in the form of Kyle Walker, Danilo and Benjamin Mendy have surely upped City’s game, providing more width and an extra attacking threat. With Ederson’s composure between the sticks, Pep has seen his team have a lot of cushion playing out the game from the goalkeeper, which has been one of his important fundamentals. It has all gone well with the new signings, and it is reflecting in City’s game.
Claudio Bravo suffered massively in the Premier League last season with his decision making and passing. Pep Guardiola’s tactics primarily demand his goalkeeper both, to be good at his distribution and at the same time provide utmost protection between the sticks. Summer signing Ederson has exactly been able to do that. He has been very impressive given it is his first season in England and it is commendable how he has so well adapted to Pep’s philosophies and made a valuable contribution to the City side.
2. The magician Kevin De Bruyne
It is safe to say that the Belgian has been a class apart from his fellow City players this season. De Bruyne, as we have known, is a world-class player when on song and right now he is some scintillating form. In spite of being given a deeper role this season, De Bruyne has been sublime with his passing and creating abilities. And if that has not been enough, he has surely contributed with some crucial goals to keep City at the top of the Premier League table.
1. Guardiola’s brilliance
Pep has always been very impressive tactically, and it is now evident in the way City have played this season. Guardiola’s Tiki-taka style was brutally effective, but at City, he has opted and instilled a free-flowing counter-attacking style of football. City have flooded the opposition with a number of players while attacking and it is wonderful to see how they link up with their off the ball movements to put on display some mesmerising football. It is Pep’s brilliance, and it is difficult to see him being beaten so easily this season.
