Bellator 218 main card changed due to injury and car accident

Calamity has struck the main event of bellator 218, not once but twice. The original main card was assigned to a middleweight bout between HrachoDarpinyan and mike Shipman, who has been unbeatable in his four Bellator appearances. However, Shipman’s injury forced him to withdraw from the match, making way in the lineup for a heavyweight contest between Rudy Schafforth and Jeremy Hardy, which was initially assigned to the preliminaries section. As a second blow to the main card, officials confirmed on Tuesday that Hardy had sustained injuries in a car accident, leading to the cancellation of the Hardy-Schafforth match.

The two cancellations have led to two relatively unknown middleweights, Will Lavine and Norbert Novenyi Jr. being put under the limelight of the main event. Novenyi defeated Mehmet Yueksel by a first round submission, making a successful Bellator debut in Hungary last April. This bout will mark the first fight for 36-year-old Lavine since June, 2017. His sole Bellator fight resulted in a second round submission to Dominic Garcia in January, 2017. The Lavine-Novenyi is scheduled to take place on Friday at the WinStar World Casino, Thackerville, Oklahoma.
